Cedar Lake Sailing Club (CLSC)
The Cedar Lake Sailing Club was formed in the Spring of 2007 to offer basic sailing lessons to any CLPO family members interested in learning to sail. The goal of the new CLSC is to offer instruction in the basic skills and the understanding needed to learn and safely enjoy the pleasures of sailing.
To start the first season's enterprise, the CLSC offered "Free Sailboat Rides" to Cedar Lakers from the East beach dock on Memorial Day. With the help of a few other Cedar Lake sailors and their boats, we ended up taking about 15-20 individuals for short rides to give them the feel of what it is like to use the wind to power a sailboat around the lake. For many of them this was their first experience in a sailboat.
From that "free ride" group, we ended up with 7 regular students who received 4 or more individual instruction sessions over the summer. We mainly used a Sunfish donated to the CLSC by Gerry & Patience Boyer as our teaching boat. Each session was about 90 minutes in length with a student in the donated teaching boat and the instructor in another sunfish. Each session was tailored to the individual's own progress and availability over the summer. Since racing on a prescribed course incorporates all the maneuvers from our teaching sessions, we used it as sort of a graduation exercise for a newly CLCC sponsored "Cedar Lake Cup" race that was held on the Labor Day weekend.
We will be offering "refresher" lessons for previous year's students and 'new" lessons for those who contact us or who tryout the "free rides" with us.
